Johor Bahru, 20 July 2020 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) through Institut Sultan Iskandar (ISI), has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Islamic University In Uganda (IUIU) today. The agreement is for a collaborative research between UTM and IUIU in developing a master plan concept of IUIU campus in Mbale, Uganda. 

The memorandum was signed by the Vice-Chancellor of UTM, Prof. Datuk Ir. Dr. Wahid bin Omar on behalf of UTM and the Rector of IUIU, Dr. Ahmad Kawesa Sengendo on behalf of IUIU. The signing ceremony was conducted online with UTM as the host. The cross-continent online signature ceremony is the first to be held at UTM. 

The ceremony was also witnessed by the Vice-Rector of IUIU, Dr. Ismail Gyagenda as the project coordinator, and the Executive Director of Institut Sultan Iskandar (ISI), Prof. Dr. Syed Ahmad Iskandar bin Syed Ariffin as the project leader of this collaborative research. 

Through this collaboration, ISI is responsible in coordinating this collaborative research that will be conducted for six months, and involve researchers from various fields such as town planning, transportation, architecture, landscape architecture, real estate, quantity surveying, mechanical and electrical engineering, and civil engineering. 

The research project involves a cost of USD120,000 which will be funded by the Islamic Development Bank. 

The Executive Director of ISI, Prof. Dr. Syed Ahmad Iskandar said, the initiative to implement this collaborative research has started since 2019.

Prof. Dr. Syed Ahmad Iskandar who is also the project leader for this project hopes that the cooperation between the two continents will provide more opportunities for future bilateral cooperation.

Prior to the collaboration with IUIU, ISI had collaborated with several entities in the African continent, such as the development of city plan for Lusaka, Zambia, as well as working with entities under the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Khartoum, Sudan.
